About 635

635 VGS is primarily a training organisation, and exists to provide elementary gliding training to air cadets. The unit is part of a group of 16 units located within the UK & Ireland, and is parented by HQAQ (Headquarters Air Cadets) stationed at RAFC Cranwell, Lincolnshire.

The staff & instructor's of 635 are voluntary, not regular, and devote their free time inspiring young cadets to fly. Some of the instructors are regular Royal Air Force pilots, and some are commercial pilots having other aviation related careers. Nevertheless, all the pilots have been trained specifically by the Royal Air Force to teach heavily standardised flying training, and have to go on intense pilot & instructional development courses, in order to attain their grades & ratings. In addition, the instructional ratings are only valid for a certain period of time, and therefore pilots have to fly regularly with the Royal Air Force to uphold their categories & standardisation.

In terms of training, 635 provides more specifically, GIC, GS & AGT training, with the focus being on GS training.
